EXISTING RECREATION & PARK FACILITIES
Where can I find tennis courts in town?
The only tennis courts available to the public in the City are owned by the Washington Unified School District. The courts are located at River City High School and are available for the public when not in use by the high school. Contact the High School or District for specific availability information.
Does the City have any tennis courts in any of its parks?
Not at this time. The City of West Sacramento adopted a Parks Master Plan in 2004 and is currently implementing planned park projects. Within the scope of that plan a number of facilities are being considered, including tennis courts. One such facility will be the West Sacramento Recreation Center (a joint use facility at the new high school on Jefferson Boulevard). This club-style facility will feature eight (8) tennis courts and should be ready for use in January of 2009.
Does the City have a dog park?
Yes, there are two public dog play areas in the City. At Sam Combs Park (corner of Jefferson & Stone) we have a spacious, fully fenced dog park with two (2) separate areas; one for large dogs and another for small dogs. Sam Combs Park is an established park with lots of shade trees. There is also a dog run at Summerfield Park on Linden.
PARK DEVELOPMENT
Are there any new parks being developed in West Sacramento?
There are currently no new parks under construction, but several projects are in the conceptual design phase. To see our parks development project status, click here.
What is the name of the park on Catalina Island in Bridgeway Island and is there a start date for construction?
The park at Catalina Island Road and Santa Barbara Street is called Patwin Park. The first phase of park improvements has been completed and the park is open for use. The Patwin/Summerfield bicycle-pedestrian bridge should be complete by the end of April 2008. The City expects to begin the final phase of improvements during the spring of 2008. There should be shade structures and restrooms in parks (like Bridgeway Island Park). Does the City plan on including these in any of its new facilities?
Items like shade structures and restrooms are big concerns for a lot of folks. We are trying to incorporate them more into new parks as we build them, depending on the size and anticipated use of the facility. We know that shade at Bridgeway Island Park is minimal now even with the limited shade that the pavilion area offers, but we will see shade increase as the trees at that site mature. As for restrooms, that facility was not designed with them in mind as it is a small neighborhood park adjacent to a school. A larger park with more recreation amenities (like softball and soccer fields, etc.) would warrant permanent restrooms. The City built a shade structure for the skate park at West Acre Playfields. There are restrooms at the Bridgeway Lakes Community Park. Restrooms will be constructed near the end of E Street as part of completing River Walk Park.
At Bridgeway Island Park there are two infant/toddler swings available, but none for older children. Will you be including play structure equipment for older kids in your design of future parks?
Staff shares this concern and would like to develop future play areas to include structures that appeal to a wider variety of ages. The playground industry is coming out with some pretty spectacular stuff and we would like to start developing parks that have challenges for all ages (climbing rocks, multi-function play structures, spray grounds & splash parks). We have begun to expand the range of amenities offered in our parks. One example of recent progress can be found at Bridgeway Lakes Park water play area. Another example is the climbing boulder that is part of Delta Gardens Park. Public input on needs and preferences will help us when designing future parks or when replacing existing play structures. Does the City have plans to develop a community/recreation center?
Two centers are in the works. The first is the West Sacramento Recreation center. Both the City Council and Washington Unified School District approved a joint-use agreement and construction of the new facility is well underway. We expect the facility to be complete during the summer of 2008 and open to the public by January of 2009. Click here for more information on the new West Sacramento Recreation Center.
The second project is the multicultural center, which is in the needs assessment, building program and conceptual design phase . This facility is intended to serve as the City's new Senior Center, as well as a facility that can meet some of the recreation and leisure needs for community members of all ages. It will include a childcare center, meeting spaces, a small cafe, and most of all a modern and inviting space for older adults to gather, socialize and recreate. Our architectural firm, Group 4, has begun producing working plans for construction. Actual construction may commence in the spring of 2009. If it does then the facility should be open to the public by late summer of 2010.
