Partnerships
Parks & Recreation has formed many partnerships over the years with a variety of agencies and organizations. The formation of these partnerships communicates the vision and value of parks and recreation to our citizens and allows our department to better serve the West Sacramento community, assist our department to achieve its goals, maximize the resources those partners may have that benefit individuals and families in the community, and provide a higher quality product for the customer. In some cases, we cannot offer a program or event without a particular partnership.

Giants Community Fund
In 1996, Parks & Recreation implemented the Junior Giants youth
baseball program. The program is made possible through the generosity
and hard work of the Giants Community Fund, an organization that
provides local recreation agencies with the equipment, supplies,

designed by the Giants Community Fund to promote the fundamentals
of baseball, while communicating the positive message of good character.
Without this partnership, this program would not be possible.

that provides nutritious noon-time meals to senior citizens in West
Sacramento. Meals are served Monday through Friday (except holidays)
at the West Sacramento Senior Center and are delivered to elderly
shut-ins at their homes through ENP's Meals-on-Wheels program. Donations
are requested for meals. Volunteers are always needed for home deliveries.
Washington Unified School District
The City of West Sacramento has a special relationship with the Washington Unified School District, which has had a direct benefit to West Sacramento residents. This cooperative effort has resulted in some of our city's park facilities. These facilities include: Alyce Norman/Bryte Playfields, Bryte Park, Elkhorn Park and Westfield Playfield. In addition to these well maintained and popular parks, the school district has cooperated in the construction of the Club West Teen Center at the Golden State Middle School and the Southport Portable Childcare Building (YMCA Childcare program) at Southport Elementary School. The most recent collaboration has resulted in the joint-use agreement between the city and the district for the design and construction of the new West Sacramento Recreation Center. Currently under construction, this new facility will be the first public health and wellness destination designed to serve the recreation and leisure needs of residents of all ages. Click here for more information about this project.
The Parks & Recreation department has also partnered with the school district on after school program in six (6) elementary schools. By securing ASES (After School Education & Safety) grant funding, the school district and Parks & Recreation department have been able to expand the Kid Zone after school program, making it available to more students free-of-charge and introducing enrichment activities that help make the after school experience more meaningful for students.

Sharks & Parks, an NHL Street Program
In 1991, the Sharks created
Sharks & Parks - a street hockey program that provided schools,
community centers and youth organizations with street hockey equipment,
coaching tools and instruction to select centers in order to generate
an interest in hockey and make it more accessible to local youth.
Since 1997, the San Jose Sharks and the National Hockey League,
through it's partners, have generously donated to the City of West

Thanks to our local Rotarians, West Sacramento children who have never gone fishing can experience this outdoor recreation sport just minutes from home. Visit the Rotary International web site for information about membership, their mission and projects.
Our Professional Associations
The Parks & Recreation department is a proud member of two professional organizations: California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) and the National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA). These professional associations provide staff with valuable information, resources and training that can help staff better serve the West Sacramento community.

California Park & Recreation Society
The California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) is a nonprofit, professional and public interest organization with more than 4,000 members statewide. CPRS was established to provide park, recreation, leisure and community service professionals and interested citizens with the knowledge and resources to enhance their leadership role in providing personal, social, economic and environmental benefits through recreation and parks. West Sacramento resides in District II and has received several District II and statewide awards.
- Vision, Insight, Planning . . . VIP Plan

One of the most pro-active efforts in the history of CPRS, the VIP Project provides leadership to recreation and park professionals to advance the positive impact and value of the profession. The project creates a vision and comprehensive strategic plan for the park and recreation profession. The West Sacramento Parks & Recreation Department has adopted the VIP vision statement, "Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs", as it clearly states the purpose of the recreation and parks profession.

National Recreation & Park Association
The mission of the National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA) is "To advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people." For more than 100 years, NRPA has been the voice advocating the significance of making parks, open space, and recreational opportunities available to all Americans. The some of the goals of NRPA include: to promote public awareness and support for recreation; to enhance the development of parks; recreation and tourism professionals and to provide services that contribute to the development of NRPA members.

- Tennis in the Parks
Just like it says, Tennis in the Parks is a program designed to bring recreational tennis back into public parks by supporting fun programs for all ages. Thanks to a partnership between the United States Tennis Association and the NRPA, communities like West Sacramento have access to resources that can help improve current tennis programs, as well as develop new programs.

United States Tennis Association
As of the summer of 2007, the Parks & Recreation department is an agency member of the USTA. Our new Recreation Center (scheduled to open in the fall of 2008) will feature eight (8) tennis courts we will be developing a tennis program that includes lessons, leagues and tournament play. We are also looking to make some improvements to the two (2) courts located at Bryte Park. With help for the USTA and members of the West Sacramento tennis community, we hope to make these courts useable for recreational tennis once again.
