Though a relatively young city, West Sacramento community life dates back to the Gold Rush. Businesses will easily find health care, education and other retail and business services in and around West Sacramento. Urgent care and medical offices are located in the city and a full service hospital is located a few miles from the city center. Nine public schools and several private schools serve West Sacramento. The city's commitment to quality schools is evidenced by approval of a $25 million local school bond issue and a special commission on school excellence. Higher education is also within easy reach with four community colleges located nearby, including the West Sacramento Center of Sacramento City College. Five universities and numerous private colleges offer specialized degree and occupational training programs.

Whether your interests include baseball, boating or bicycling, West Sacramento can accommodate you. Our 22 neighborhood parks include direct river access for fishing and boating, viewing the river or enjoying concerts at River Walk Park. During summer evenings, you're likely to find residents at Raley Field enjoying a River Cats game. West Sacramento is at the heart of a thriving metropolitan area whose cultural offerings include the Sacramento Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic, the Sacramento Community Theater and art and history museums. Other leisure and entertainment opportunities include fine restaurants, wineries, brew pubs and the popular Sacramento Kings NBA basketball team.

REGIONAL CULTURE AND RECREATION
West Sacramento is in the heart of the thriving Sacramento metropolitan area, known for its rich cultural offerings and proximity to world class, year-round recreation. The Sacramento Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic, the Sacramento Community Theater, the annual Music Circus and multiple theatre groups provide many opportunities to enjoy regional and international entertainment. The annual Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee music festival takes place on the Sacramento and West Sacramento waterfronts with local and international musicians entertaining throughout the Memorial Holiday weekend. Nearby, UC Davis recently added a 104,000-square foot performing arts center. The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts offers a wide variety of programs and music from around the world including a lecture series featuring authors, politicians and scientists, adding to the region’s increasing international recognition.

The Sacramento and American Rivers meet and define West Sacramento's northern and eastern boundaries, providing easy access to hiking, camping, boating, water skiing and fishing. The American River Parkway offers one of the finest riparian recreational corridors of any metropolitan area in the United States. Each weekend, thousands of Sacramentans bike along its shores, fly fish for salmon from its banks and wade and bathe on its pristine beaches and sandbars.

A few minutes across the Tower Bridge in downtown Sacramento are the retail shops and restaurants of the downtown area and historic Old Sacramento. Downtown attractions include the Crocker Art Museum, the State Railroad Museum, the Towe Antique Auto Museum, Sacramento Community Theatre, IMAX Theater and numerous nightclubs and restaurants.

Sacramentans are enthusiastic sports fans and support professional teams including the beloved NBA Kings, the women’s NBA Sacramento Monarchs, the Sacramento Knights professional soccer team, and West Sacramento’s own River Cats, Triple A baseball affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Residents regularly make the short drive to see the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Giants.

Just a two-hour drive from ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and state parks on the scenic Northern California coast, Sacramento's location is ideal. The Napa Sonoma wine country is a leisurely one and a half hour's drive away, as are the cosmopolitan charms of San Francisco Bay.

PARKS AND RECREATION
West Sacramento’s outstanding recreational opportunities include 11 miles of river frontage, 17 parks, 2 pools, 3 community centers, and a wide selection of recreational programs for every interest. River Walk Park, the crown jewel of the city, offers scenic access to the Sacramento River and plays host to many community concerts and activities the West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual River Bank Music Festival and Neighbors Fair every fall featuring nationally recognized blues, rock and gospel talents as well as local musicians. A full day of live entertainment, arts and crafts, kids activities, and a variety of delicious ethnic foods, make this event a regional favorite. Also sponsored by the City of West Sacramento is the free evening concert series “Harmony on the River” held at the River Walk Park. Additionally, the Civic Center Concert Series features the West Sacramento Orchestra in free concerts held at the new Civic Center.

Local bicycle clubs frequently meet on the city’s bicycle trails to travel to Sacramento recreational areas and nearby city of Davis trails. The West Sacramento Bicycle Path Gateway is a bicycle park at the end of West Capitol Avenue where cyclists can rest before crossing the Yolo Bypass. Additional bike paths are being added as the Southport development continues to grow and expand.

The City of West Sacramento places special emphasis on the development of children by offering a wide spectrum of activities and programs. Youth sports programs include Little League Baseball, girl’s softball, swimming, boy’s and girl’s basketball, street hockey, soccer, rowing and NFL flag football. The “After-School Adventure” is a fun, educational and athletic program that
kids can participate in throughout the school year for free. During the summer months, children can participate in a six-week day camp held at several locations in the city. Eleven different youth sports special events are held annually by the Recreation Department. The Club West Teen Center also offers after school programs and annually host field trips, dances, and club activities. The West Sacramento branch of the Yolo County Library is open six days a week and offers preschool story time, school age crafts and stories, and teen poetry contests.

EDUCATION
Primary Education
There are eight public elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools in the Washington Unified School District. The newest addition to the district, Bridgeway Elementary School opened in 2002 and is located in the Bridgeway Island community of Southport. West Sacramento’s dedication to improve the educational environment for all children was reaffirmed with the passage of a $52 million school bond in March 2004 to build a new high school. The new school site will be in the Southport area in anticipation of the expected population growth. Local school scores continue to rise each year in the Washington School District with River City High School scoring the largest improvement in the Sacramento and Placer County areas for 2003. In 2002, both Southport Elementary and Westmore Oaks Elementary received the California Distinguished Schools Award. And in 2003, Westmore Oaks Elementary School was the only recipient of the national No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Award in Yolo County. Elementary school teacher Dawn Imamoto was named Teacher of the Year for 2004, celebrating her unwavering dedication to education. Vocational Education
There are six accredited vocational schools located in West Sacramento, including the newest addition Wyo-Tech. Specializing in car technology and repair, the 80,000 square foot campus is part of Corinthian Colleges which was ranked No.6 on Fortune magazine’s 2003 list of the 100 fastest-growing companies. West Sacramento’s River City High School offers a School at Work program targeting electronics and engineering training. Students are offered workplace training with local firms while attending school. The Linking Education to Economic Development (LEED) program is a regional program used by many businesses in the area including the River Cats and also by River City High School to link university courses and training to local companies needs. They offer the Workforce Skills Certification program, certifying participants as skilled in a variety of areas, and the California Intern Connection a program that matches participating businesses with interns.

Secondary Education
Located within 20 minutes of West Sacramento are five universities and four public community colleges. UC Davis is one of the top rated public universities in the nation with the medical center ranking highly among America’s Best Hospitals in 2003 according to a recent U.S. News & World Report. The University’s Medical school was ranked in the top 40 in the nation, as well as the professional schools of Law, Business, and Engineering, according to a separate report by U.S. News & World Report.

California State University, Sacramento is also nearby and has been recognized as one of the top public universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report. This beautiful campus is located adjacent to the American River and offers a wide variety of academic programs.

The Los Rios Community College District has four campuses in the metropolitan region. Services available to businesses through the Community College system include the International Trade Development program which offers no and low-cost consulting services as well as seminars and workshops. The Workplace Learning program offers employers high quality, affordable services for improved employee performance. And the Small Business Development and Consulting program offers in depth help to those who already own a small business and those that want to start a small business. Los Rios Community Colleges offer many different degrees and certifications including: accounting, biotechnology, business, management, nursing, technical communications, web page design, and computer programming.

HEALTH CARE
Urgent care, occupational therapy and medical offices are located in West Sacramento. Twenty-five acute care facilities are located within the Sacramento area. The closest is the University of California Davis Medical Center. This full-service, teaching hospital is approximately three miles from the City. It ranks among America's Best Hospitals in nine of seventeen medical specialties, according to a U.S. News & World Report annual survey.

RETAIL SERVICES
Retail and commercial services are located in five local shopping centers throughout West Sacramento. The central business district, centered at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and West Capitol Avenue, is home to three national bank branches, many restaurants, several grocery stores, two national drug store chains and numerous retail services. The rapidly growing Southport area will soon have a its own neighborhood shopping center called the Southport Town Center. Southport Town Center will be located on 30 acres at the southeastern corner of Jefferson Blvd. and Linden Road and will be anchored by a Nugget Market. The shopping and entertainment of downtown Sacramento is just a few minutes away at Downtown Plaza, Sacramento's downtown mall. Downtown Plaza is anchored by Macy's and 180 specialty stores. The 100 restaurants and unique shops of Old Sacramento are just across the river from West Sacramento.

Other shopping centers located throughout the Sacramento region offer the retail opportunities typical of a large metropolitan area.

 

CHILD CARE
Fifty-four licensed daycare facilities are available in the city, with some specializing in infant care and others in pre-school or school age children. The City of West Sacramento offers the Discovery Preschool Program for preschool age children, which promotes school readiness by acquainting children with numbers, shapes, colors and the alphabet. The Washington Unified School District offers the Early Childhood Education program with facilities located on site at the districts elementary campuses. HOTELS AND CONVENTION FACILITIES
A number of hotels exist in West Sacramento including the Best Western Harbor Inn and the new Holiday Inn Express, both on Harbor Boulevard. The Harbor Inn and Suites offers 138 guestrooms and suites in a quality business environment with conference facilities to accommodate 180 attendees.
