News and updates
regarding projects of the West Sacramento Redevelopment Agency:
Tower Bridge Opening
After being closed for two months, the Tower Bridge re-opened on November 20, 2007. The sidewalks were widened from 3 feet to 10 feet; these improvements are expected to increase pedestrian traffic between downtown Sacramento and West Sacramento.
Intersection of Tower Bridge Gateway & Garden Street
The road work on the intersection of Tower Bridge Gateway and Garden Street is now complete. The former overpass to Riske Lane from West Capitol Avenue has been removed. This construction is important to the redevelopment of the Triangle area, and provides access to the new Ironworks lofts.
CalSTRS Building
The new headquarters for the California Teachers Retirement System started construction in 2007, with move-in expected in spring of 2009. The new office building is 19 stories and 400,000 square feet, and is expected to accommodate 1,500 to 2,000 employees.

Stone Lock District Development
Through an Exclusive Negotiations Agreement, the Cordish Company was approved to be the master developer of the Stone Lock District. Grants Received for Riverwalk Park
In June, the City received word that it was the recipient of another Proposition 50 grant for Riverwalk improvements. The state Resources Agency announced that West Sacramento received a $1.7 grant of the total $32.7 million awarded statewide. The grant will pay for the extension of the Riverwalk Park immediately south of the Tower Bridge. Walker Macy has been designing the park improvements for the area from the Tower Bridge to south of the Pioneer Bridge.
Enterprise Zone Designation
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger named West Sacramento as one of eight places allowed to become "enterprise zones" eligible for tax credits and benefits to help local businesses. West Sacramento was previously part of an enterprise zone, and the new designation will last 15 years.
California Indian Heritage Center
The City of West Sacramento has agreed to donate 43 acres on the Sacramento River for the California Indian Heritage Center (CIHC). This location will overlook the convergence of the American and Sacramento rivers. The West Sacramento site is planned to include a library, archives, tribal treasures exhibit space, resident artist space, offices, classrooms, a café, museum store, amphitheatre and event space, and indigenous gardens and parking.
California State Parks and the City of West Sacramento are holding an Open House on Monday, February 11 anytime between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm, for the purpose of receiving public comment on a proposal to develop a State Park including the California Indian Heritage Center along West Sacramento's riverfront.
CHP Headquarters Relocation
As of June 2007, the California Highway Patrol became allowed to locate their headquarters outside of the Sacramento city limits. The CHP is considering potential relocation and consolidation of their headquarters, and West Sacramento is one of those potential locations. Because of its location and reduced-cost land, West Sacramento is a top site being considered. The CHP headquarters in the city would boost West Sacramento’s economy and raise its profile.
West Sac Wi-Fi Upgrades Completed
Upgrades to the West Capitol Wi-Fi are now complete. These upgrades bring the city's wireless system to current wireless standards and ensure that the West Capitol Wi-Fi system remains accessible and reliable for all users in the coverage area.
