February Programs at Arthur F. Turner Library

The Arthur F. Turner Community Library located at 1212 Merkley Avenue in West Sacramento. 

February 2 – West Sacramento VITA (Saturday) at 9am – 3pm

Every Saturday starting February 2, 2019 through April 14, 2019 come and get help in preparing your 2018 Income Tax FREE at the library. This service is provided by the West Sacramento VITA group. 

February 3 – West Sacramento VITA (Sunday) at 1:30pm – 5pm

February 3 – Sunday Movie Matinee for Adults at 2pm-4pm

Join us for a PG-13 or rated R movie shown on our giant screen, with free popcorn! For ages 18+ only. Brought to you with the generous support of the West Sacramento Friends of the Library. Call the library for the title 916-375-6465.

February 8 – Maker Kids at 3:30pm-5pm
Maker Kids is coming to the Arthur F. Turner Community Library. Please join us for a monthly hands-on program and exploring science, technology, engineering, art, and math at the library. Every month explore a new activity examining the fascinating world around us. Best for ages 6-12, young children will need the assistance of their responsible grown up!

February 10 – Family Movie at 2pm-4pm

Join us for a family-friendly movie rated G or PG shown on our giant screen, with free popcorn! Brought to you with the generous support of the West Sacramento Friends of the Library. Call the library for the title 916-375-6465.

February 11 – Love on a Leash at 3pm-4pm

Children ages 6 through 12 are invited to join us for a fun “Read to a Dog” program. Parents or caregivers are asked to stay with their child and help with the reading.  This helps build confidence in reading out loud. After 10 visits, participants get a free book.

February 11 – Valentine’s Day Card Making at 4pm-5:30pm

Kids of all ages and their parents/caregivers are invited to come out and create their own special Valentine’s Card for themselves or someone special! Materials will be provided.   

February 13 – Teen Club at 5pm-6pm (Teen Room)                                        

Teens are invited to participate in our bi-weekly program focused on developing leadership skills through engaging activities. Snacks will be provided. Great for ages 13-18.

February 15 - Tai Chi & Qigong Part XXXVII  at 4pm-5pm
Come and learn a series of movements and breathing exercises for general wellness, stress relief, physical balance, flexibility and fall prevention. Come in comfortable clothing, floor mats will be provided. Please note that you do not attend previous session to attend this class. No registration required.

Dr. Gigi Tze-yue Hu is a semi-retired Asian Studies scholar and has a Master Degree in Tai Chi from the University of the East-West Medicine in Sunnyvale, CA.

February 18– LIBRARY CLOSED

February 20 – Computers 103 at 9am-11am
Adult are welcome to register for this free basic computer class. It offers participants a basic introduction to strong passwords, usernames and what they are used for, and creating an email account, as well as time to practice. Computers will be provided. Registration is required as space is limited.

February 20 – What’s Happening, Seniors? at 12pm-1:30pm

Do you want to get together with interesting and active seniors? Do you want to make new friends, share stories, learn from one another and plan activities? Join our group and find out “What's Happening” in West Sacramento and beyond!

February 20 – Evening Book Club at 6pm-7pm

Join us for our monthly evening book club.  Books are collected and distributed at the meeting.  This month’s reading selection will be “The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks” by Terry Tempest Williams. Please contact Cindy at (916) 731-5504 for more information.

February 21 - Aguas Frescas: Paint Night at 6pm-7:30pm
Come and drink some aguas frescas (Spanish for cool waters) while creating a maker project! This month’s project will be paint night! Materials provided.

February 22 – Lego Block Party at 3:30pm-5pm

Please join us for our monthly block party! Join us in the Community Room and build with Legos! In this self-directed program youth are invited to build with Legos at the Library! Big and small blocks will be provided; small children should be supervised.

February 27 – West Sacramento Friends of the Library Monthly Meeting at 6pm-8pm

The WSFOL meets the last Wednesday of the month. WSFOL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to serving the West Sacramento community supporting library programs and services. On-Going Programs

Bilingual Russian Story Time – Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Children up to 5 years of age and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, movement, rhymes and finger-plays in Russian and English. Arts and crafts will also be provided as part of this story time. 

Buddy Reading – Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Practice reading with an older “buddy”. Each child will be paired up with a high school student from the River City High School Interact Club for a 30-minute reading session. This helps builds confidence in reading aloud, as well as reading comprehension.  After 10 visits, participants can pick 1 free book.

Hora De Cuentos/Bilingual Spanish Story Time – Saturdays at 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Children up to 5 years of age and their parents/caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, movement, rhymes and finger-plays in Spanish and English. Arts and crafts will also be provided as part of this story time. 

English Conversation Groups – Wednesdays at 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Join our adult Conversation Group and improve your English in a fun and relaxed way with the aid of a group facilitator. No registration is required; drop-in visitors are welcome.

Homework Center – Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

FREE afterschool program for students in grades 3 through 8 to receive homework help.  Pre-Registration is required.  Registration is free and available at Library. Questions? Please call (916) 375-6468 to speak with the Innovation Coordinator.

Hug-a-Bye Baby Story Time – Thursdays at 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Children up to 12 months of age and their parents or caregivers are invited to this lap-sit program that features language development through songs, picture books, finger-plays and lullabies.

Mother Goose On The Loose – Tuesdays at 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

An award winning program for children (ages 12 to 36 months) and their parents or caregivers that combines music, movement, visual literacy and language development to help children develop emotionally and socially while encouraging a positive attitude towards learning. 

Preschool Story Time – Wednesdays at 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Children ages 3 to 5 years and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, rhymes, song and finger-plays to help develop early literacy skills and encourage group participation.
