On Thursday, May 29, the city officially opened the Sycamore Trail Overpass with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community bike ride. The new bridge is the first in the city built specifically for people walking and biking, creating a safer and more direct connection across Highway 50.
“This bridge does something truly transformative,” said Mayor Martha Guerrero. “For years, the freeway divided the north and south sides of the city, forcing residents into their cars just to get from one neighborhood to another. Now we have a safe, beautiful, and sustainable route that allows families, students, and cyclists to walk or bike across the city—connecting homes, businesses, schools, parks, and sports fields.”
The event began with residents and city leaders riding together from City Hall, through Joey Lopes Park, and south across the overpass for the first time. Members of the River City Regiment drum line then led a march back across the bridge going north to complete the official opening ceremonies.
The Sycamore Trail Overpass completes Phase II of the Sycamore Trail Extension Project, a five-part plan to create a continuous path from Sacramento Avenue near Yolo Street to Lake Washington and Jefferson Boulevards.
The new overpass is a key step toward improving transportation options and connecting neighborhoods throughout the city.
The bright blue "City of West Sacramento" sign on each side of the bridge also serves as a marker for the City. Travelers heading to San Francisco or Lake Tahoe, or to an A's or River Cats game will know they've arrived in West Sacramento!
