The City of West Sacramento reminds residents to properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) this holiday season to avoid sewer clogs and backups. Proper FOG disposal is simple and protects your pipes and community.
Follow These Easy Tips for FOG-Free Drains:
- Never pour FOG down the drain or garbage disposal.
- Scrape or wipe excess grease and food scraps into the trash before rinsing dishes or cookware. Use a sink strainer to catch small scraps and empty it into the trash.
- Use cool water, not hot, when rinsing dishes. Hot water temporarily melts grease, which hardens later and sticks to pipes.
- Dispose of grease properly: Pour small amounts into a disposable container and toss it in the trash.
- Handle large quantities of oil safely: Drop off used cooking oil at the Yolo County Landfill from Thursday – Saturday, 7:30am–3:30pm. Seniors 65+ or disabled residents can call (530) 666-8856 for free pickup. Never put bulk oil or liquid fats in the garbage.
FOG buildup is a leading cause of sewer backups. If you experience an issue, report it through West Sac Connect.
