Library Hosts Programs in March

Check out the March events hosted by the Arthur F. Turner Community Library below. All events are FREE and take place at 1212 Merkley Avenue in West Sacramento!

March 1, 2018 - One-on-One Technology Help at 3pm-4pm (By Appointment Only)
If you have any technology questions please make an appointment for our Tech Help One-on-One sessions. Each session will be 20 minutes and you have to register at the Information Desk or call (916) 375-6465. 

March 3, 2018 – West Sacramento VITA (Saturday) at 8am – 1pm

Every Saturday beginning February 10, 2018 through April 15, 2018 get help in preparing your 2017 Income Tax FREE at the library.  This service is provided by the West Sacramento VITA group.

March 3, 2018 – Teen Anime Afternoon at 3pm-5pm
Teens 12-18 are invited to watch the anime of their choosing at the library! Free Popcorn while supplies last. All teens welcome!

March 3, 2018 through April 14, 2018 - In-N-Out Burger’s Cover to Cover Library Reading Program
Kids age 4 through 12 can register for the “Cover to Cover” Reading Program and receive free food coupons from In-N-Out  Burger.  The reading program runs from March 3rd through April 14th.  For every 5 books a child reads, he/she will receive a “Cover to Cover” Achievement Award, qualifying the participant for a free hamburger or cheeseburger at any In-N-Out Burger restaurant.  Each participant can receive up to 3 certificates.

March 4, 2018 – West Sacramento VITA (Sunday) at 1:30pm – 5pm

Every Sunday beginning February 10, 2018 through April 15, 2018 get help in preparing your 2017 Income Tax FREE at the library.  This service is provided by the West Sacramento VITA group.

March 5, 2018 - Multi-Sensory Story Time at 12pm-1pm
Children ages 1 to 5 years and their parents/caregivers are invited to join us for an inclusive story time that focuses on children with special sensory needs. Story time will be using adapted books and sensory toys.

March 5, 2018 – Sacramento Sunyata Meditation and Qi Gong at 4:30pm-6pm

All are invited to come and learn about the benefits of Meditation and Qi Gong. Learn simple techniques to reduce stress and anxiety, decrease blood pressure, improve digestion, and increase self-awareness. No prior experience or knowledge needed. Please do not eat within 2 hours prior to the Qi Gong exercises. Remember to wear loose, comfortable clothes.

March 7, 2018 - Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) at 3:30pm-4:30pm

Come and meet a representative from the Yolo County Health & Human Services from 3:30pm-4:30pm to learn about adult and dislocated worker training services. Starting January 2018, WIOA will only be at the library once a month.

March 7, 2018 - Teen Club at 5pm-6pm (Teen Room)
Teens are invited to participate in our bi-weekly program focused on developing leadership skills through engaging activities. Snacks will be provided. Great for ages 13-18.

March 8, 2018 – All Things String at 6pm-8pm

Whether you knit, crochet, embroider, or enjoy other fiber arts, this social crafting circle is for you! Bring your current project or start something new!

March 10, 2018 – West Sacramento VITA (Saturday) at 8am – 1pm

March 10, 2018 - Family Program: St. Patty’s Craft at 3pm-4pm

Families are invited to come out and participate in our ST. Patty’s Craft. We will be creating 5 different arts and crafts based on St. Patrick’s Day. All materials will be provided.

March 11, 2018 – West Sacramento VITA (Sunday) at 1:30pm – 5pm

Every Sunday beginning February 10, 2018 through April 15, 2018 get help in preparing your 2017 Income Tax FREE at the library. This service is provided by the West Sacramento VITA group.

March 12, 2018 - Love on a Leash at 4pm-5pm

Children ages 6 through 12 are invited to read to a therapy dog. Animals are great reading companions because they are patient and do not judge. Parents/caregivers are asked to stay with their child. After 10 visits, participants can pick 1 free book.

March 12, 2018 - Virtual Reality Game Play: Robo Recall/City Tours at 6pm-7:30pm
If you’re over 18 years old join us on March 12th at 6:00pm for an interactive Virtual Reality program! You will have a chance to ward off a robot invasion and learn how to use the Oculus Rift controls and headset while playing Robo Recall. You can also sit back and relax and take city tours of Paris, London, and many more – even Sacramento! It will be like you’re actually there.

March 20, 2018 – Special Story Time with Arik Armstead from the 49ers at 11am-12pm
Come join us for a special story time reading with Arik Armstead, the Defensive End from the San Francisco 49ers! He is a Sacramento native and has made it his mission to support and impact change for Education Equality. People are encouraged to stay for the Q&A after story time!

March 21, 2018 - What’s Happening Seniors? at 12pm-1:30pm
Want to get together with interested, active seniors to make new friends, share stories, learn from one another, and find out What's Happening in West Sacramento and beyond?

March 21, 2018 - Evening Book Club at 6pm-7pm

March 23, 2018 – UCCE Yolo County Master Gardeners: Composting and Vermiculture at 12pm-2pm

Come and learn all about composting and vermiculture at the library. UCCE Yolo County Master Gardeners will show how easy it is to compost – what to put in it, what to put it in, and how to “care” for it. There is also a working worm farm, and tips on how to start and maintain your own. This workshop is FREE.  Bring your garden questions to the Q&A to be held after the workshop. March 26, 2018 - Tales for Tails at 4pm-5pm
Children ages 6 through 12 are invited to join us for a fun “Read to a Dog” program. You will get to meet up to 4 (FOUR!) very special dogs and their handlers.

Animals are ideal reading companions because they: 1. Listen attentively; 2. Do not judge, laugh or     criticize; 3. Allow children to proceed at their own pace; and 4. Are less intimidating than peers.   Parents or caregivers are asked to stay with their child and help with the reading. This helps builds confidence in reading out loud. After 10 visits, a participant can pick 1 free book.

March 28, 2018 - WSFOL Monthly Meeting at 6:30pm-8pm
The WSFOL meets the last Wednesday of the month.  WSFOL is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization dedicated to serving the West Sacramento community supporting library programs and services. March 30, 2018 – Therapeutic Tai Chi and Qigong – Part XXVII at 4pm-5pm

Come and learn a series of movements and breathing exercise for general wellness, stress relief, physical balance, flexibility and fall prevention. In Part XXVII, we shall learn some of the training postures and warm-up exercises that are practiced in Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chuan as well. They help to increase our body strength, the ability to have better self-control of balance with coordinated breathing and mental concentration. Floor mats will be provided. Please note that you do not attend previous session to attend this class. No registration required. Please come in comfortable clothing.

Dr. Gigi Tze-yue Hu is a semi-retired Asian Studies scholar and has a Master Degree in Tai Chi from the University of the East-West Medicine in Sunnyvale, CA.

March 31, 2018 – Special Program: Egg Hunt at 1pm-2pm in Kids Room

Families are invited to come out and participate in our special Egg Hunt. Kids will be able to hunt for eggs at the library. All eggs will be provided.


On-Going Programs: 

Bilingual Russian Story – Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 
Children up to 5 years old and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, movement, rhymes and finger-plays in Russian and English. Arts and crafts will also be provided as part of this story time.

Bilingual Spanish Story – Saturdays at 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Children up to 5 years old and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, movement, rhymes and finger-plays in Spanish and English. Arts and crafts will also be provided as part of this story time. 

Buddy Reading – Mondays at 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Practice reading with an older “buddy.” Each child will be paired up with a high school student from the River City High School Interact Club for a 30-minute reading session.  This helps builds confidence in reading out loud and comprehension in reading. After 10 visits, a participant can pick 1 free book.  Registration Required.

Homework Center – Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
FREE after school program for students in grades 3 through 8 to receive homework help.  Pre-Registration is required.  Registration application is free and available at the Information/Reference Desk at the Arthur F. Turner Community Library.  For questions, please call (916) 375-6469 to speak with the Homework Center Assistant. 

Hug-A-Bye Baby – Thursdays at 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Children up to 12 months of age and their parents or caregivers are invited to this lap-sit program that features language development through songs, picture books, finger-plays and lullabies. 

Mother Goose – Tuesdays at 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
An award winning program for children (ages 12 to 36 months) and their parents or caregivers that combines music, movement, visual literacy and language development to help children develop emotionally and socially while encouraging a positive attitude towards learning.

Preschool Story Time– Wednesdays at 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Children ages 3 to 5 years and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, rhymes, song and finger-plays to help develop early literacy skills and encourage group participation.
