Background:

The Washington District is a 194-acre area in West Sacramento, bounded by Cabaldon Parkway to the south, the Sacramento River to the east, A Street to the north, and portions of 6th and 8th Streets to the west. Ideally located along the riverfront and just one mile from downtown Sacramento, the district offers significant potential for sustainable, mixed-use development. 

The City of West Sacramento has made the Washington District a key focus area for investment, with ongoing efforts in planning, deindustrialization, and infrastructure improvements aimed at supporting redevelopment and creating vibrant, connected neighborhoods along the Sacramento River. 

The City's commitment to revitalizing the area is evident through a series of transformative projects. In 2019, the City completed the $17 million Washington District Sustainable Community Infrastructure Project—the most substantial neighborhood investment in West Sacramento’s history. Additionally, the North Riverwalk Trail Extension Project has improved riverfront access by linking the existing Riverwalk Trail to the Broderick Boat Ramp, further enhancing mobility and recreation opportunities. 

Building on this progress, the City Council approved a $700,000 allocation from the Traffic Impact Fund (TIF) in 2019 to support the design of the 5th and F Street Traffic Signal Project. Located at the intersection of 5th and F Streets, this project marks another important step in the district’s ongoing transformation into a safe, accessible, and dynamic urban neighborhood.

Scope:

This project involves the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of 5th Street and F Street. 

Project Benefits:

The installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of 5th Street and F Street will enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians by improving traffic control and reducing the risk of collisions. This upgrade is expected to promote smoother traffic flow for conflicting turn movements, and support better accessibility for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and individuals with mobility challenges. By adding a traffic signal at this location, the project also contributes to the city’s broader efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and ensure a safer, more efficient travel experience for the community.
