Background:

The Washington District is a 194-acre area in West Sacramento, bounded by Cabaldon Parkway to the south, the Sacramento River to the east, A Street to the north, and portions of 6th and 8th Streets to the west. Ideally located along the riverfront and just one mile from downtown Sacramento, the district offers significant potential for sustainable, mixed-use development.

The City of West Sacramento has made the Washington District a key focus area for investment, with ongoing efforts in planning, deindustrialization, and infrastructure improvements aimed at supporting redevelopment and creating vibrant, connected neighborhoods along the Sacramento River.

The City's commitment to revitalizing the area is evident through a series of transformative projects. In 2019, the City completed the $17 million Washington District Sustainable Community Infrastructure Project—the most substantial neighborhood investment in West Sacramento’s history. Additionally, the North Riverwalk Trail Extension Project has improved riverfront access by linking the existing Riverwalk Trail to the Broderick Boat Ramp, further enhancing mobility and recreation opportunities.

To build upon this progress, the Council approved 2019 and 2023 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) allocations totaling $511,320 for the design of the Washington Public Improvement Infrastructure within the Washington Neighborhood.  The project is located along the south side of F Street between 5th and 6th Streets.

Description of Scope:

This project aims to enhance local infrastructure by completing missing sidewalk segments, improving pedestrian connectivity and safety. Upgrades will also include the installation of new street lighting and ADA-compliant curb ramps to ensure accessibility for all community members. In addition, landscaping and irrigation will be added, designed to match the aesthetic of recent improvements made in the Washington District. 

Project Benefits:

The project will deliver a range of community benefits by addressing key infrastructure gaps and enhancing public spaces. By completing disconnected sidewalk segments and installing ADA-compliant curb ramps, the project will significantly improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians of all ages and abilities. New street lighting will increase visibility and contribute to a safer environment during evening hours. Additionally, the inclusion of landscaping and irrigation—designed to reflect the recent enhancements in the Washington District—will beautify the area and create a more welcoming, vibrant streetscape. Together, these improvements will support walkability, promote active transportation, and strengthen neighborhood connectivity, contributing to a healthier, more inclusive, and visually appealing community.
