West Capitol Ave between I-80 and Tower Bridge Gateway, and Westacre Rd/15th St between West capitol Ave and South River Rd.

Background:

West Capitol Avenue serves a diverse group of users ranging from heavy trucks, due to the surrounding industrial land uses, to regional east - west bike commuters, connecting Davis to Sacramento. This diverse group is due to West Capitol Ave being the City’s biggest east to west corridor serving multiple zoning land uses. The City’s desired outcome is to develop West Capitol Ave into a low-stress regional corridor that encourages all modes of transportation consistent with the City’s 2024 Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trails Master Plan.

Scope of Project:

Recently the City completed the West Capitol Avenue Safety Enhancement & Road Rehabilitation Project providing paint buffered bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, street signaling, and street lighting.

Westacre Road/15th Street connects to West Capitol Avenue and is a two-lane, undivided collector. Adjacent to this road are residences, parks, Yolo High School, and other businesses.

The Project will:

- Add delineators to the painted buffered bike lanes on West Capitol between I-80 and Jefferson Blvd;

- Restripe Class II facilities along West Capitol/Grand Avenue between Jefferson Blvd and Cabaldon Parkway, to increase visibility and improve safety;

- Add new Class II bicycle facilities along Westacre Road between West Capitol Avenue and South River Road; and

- Intersection improvements on West Capitol Avenue between Jefferson Blvd and Cabaldon Parkway; Westacre Road at Merkley Avenue, Willow Avenue, and Evergreen Avenue; and 15th Street and Jefferson Blvd to increase visibility and improve safety.

Project Benefits:

The project will increase safety among the most dangerous bike routes in the city for both cyclists and pedestrians. The improvements to Westacre Road will provide a safe north-south connection that allows cyclists/pedestrians to avoid going through the more congested Jefferson Blvd.
