City Limits to Clarksburg

Planning is underway to improve access to the Clarksburg Branch Line Trail (CBLT) south of the city limits. This project will improve the existing dirt trail, open to the public since 2005, resulting in multi-use trail that will better serve bicycle, pedestrian, and equestrian users with parallel paved and unpaved paths and increase connectivity between West Sacramento and Clarksburg.

About the Project

The CBLT extension includes 6.4 miles of trail that will provide a key link within the Great California Delta Trail and SACOG’s Sacramento Regional Trail Network. Design of this segment of the CBLT is another step toward achieving the vision of a connected recreational corridor that is decades in the making and will be enjoyed by future generations. The project is currently in the environmental clearance process, which will continue through 2026. Design is anticipated from summer 2025 to fall 2026.

The CBLT Extension will connect West Sacramento and Clarksburg along an improved rail-trail purchased by the City in 2005.

 Project Benefits

  • Promote connectivity between neighborhoods and communities by constructing a multi-use trail serving bicycle and pedestrian users.
  • Reduce bicyclist and pedestrian exposure to high-speed vehicle traffic by eight miles; reduce active transportation distance between West Sacramento and Clarksburg by 2.5 miles in total.
  • Create opportunities that connect the community with nature and encourage active transportation.
  • Improve safety of walking and bicycling in the Delta by bypassing roads that are the site of 103 injury/fatality crashes in the most recent 10-year-period for which data is available:

SafetyMap

  • Conversion of 5% of current automobile trips between Sacramento/West Sacramento and Clarksburg to bicycle travel and inducement of additional bicycle and pedestrian travel between the two areas.
  • Boosting economic activity in West Sacramento and the Delta: See "Economic Sustainability Plan for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta" and "Recreation & Tourism in the Delta" below.
  • Potential for educational opportunities through elements such as interpretive signs that reflect local railroad and settlement history, share facts about local agriculture, honor Indigenous peoples, and encourage habitat conservation.

This trail has been planned for over twenty years!

At every stage in the City, County, Regional, and State planning processes, community members have enthusiastically supported the trail. They see the value that other major trails bring to neighboring communities in our region and want to see the recreational opportunities, transportation safety improvements, and expansion of customers here in Southeast Yolo County. This desire for trails is reflected in home and land prices. The economics literature that shows that homes increase in value when trails open near them.

Below is a sampling of the community-supported plans that call for the trail. These show that the people of West Sacramento, Clarksburg, Yolo County, the Sacramento and Delta regions, and the State of California want to see this trail finished.
