Requirements for the position of Entry Level Firefighter for the City of West Sacramento Fire Department
During Recruit status, attends training sessions to learn firefighting methods; learns basic concepts of fire science; learns basic defensive driving techniques of fire apparatus; learns equipment operation and maintenance procedures and practices; learns to operate fire extinguishers, fog nozzles, and similar equipment in the extinguishment of fires; learns to raise, lower, and climb ladders; learns salvage and overhaul operations; learns basic emergency medical procedures; learns the organization, chain of command, and rules and regulations of the West Sacramento Fire Department; receives and participates in physical fitness training; and learns other related courses or programs as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: Basic arithmetic functions, first aid, and CPR.
Ability to: Understand and learn firefighting information from oral and written sources; read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient performance; understand mechanical diagrams and concepts; understand and follow oral instructions; learn the City street and physical layout of the City of West Sacramento; learn a wide variety of firefighting duties, methods, and procedures including the operation of firefighting apparatus, equipment, and tools; learn to perform physical and strenuous firefighting work requiring physical strength, coordination, endurance, and flexibility; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; maintain effective audio−visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles; maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of demonstrating intellectual capabilities during training and testing processes.
Education and Experience
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: None required.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class "3" or "C" California driver's license. Loss of the Class "3" or "C" license is cause for discipline, up to and including termination. Possession and maintenance of a valid California Emergency Medical Technician I certificate.
Ability to wear and use SCBA units as regulated by Cal/OSHA. Facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment. Employment is subject to the candidate positively passing a fingerprint and background check and pre−placement medical and psychological examinations.
