The City of West Sacramento Child Signature Program, known as UP4WS, is a partnership between City of West Sacramento, First 5 Yolo and First 5 California, with the primary goal of offering high quality, accessible childcare and preschool to all children 0 - 5 in West Sacramento. Establishing high-quality standards for education and care, elevating preschool teachers’ pay to professional wage levels and bringing new educators into the classroom are essential components of the UP4WS plan.
As of June 2017, we have served over 4,300 infants, toddlers, and preschool aged children in the West Sacramento community.
In 2005, our first year of operation, we began with just 135 preschool aged children. Today we serve between 400 - 700 children 0 - 5 years of age yearly.
In UP4WS, children thrive in school, center, and home based settings that combine excellent teacher-to-student ratios with developmentally appropriate curriculum and a diverse, well-trained teaching staff.
UP4WS results are in: There is consistently a tremendous educational growth for children enrolled, and children go to Kindergarten better prepared to face the challenge of school.
90% of all families participating in UP4WS are at or below poverty level. About 40% of UP4WS students are learning English as a second language.
UP4WS utilizes many teachers who are bilingual in English and a second language, including Spanish, Russian, Farsi, and Chinese.
Since our inception, an increasing number of high quality preschool and childcare slots have been available each year. Yearly assessment of our preschoolers reveals that the school readiness of the children participating improves exponentially. This quality enhancement is achieved through physical improvement of existing preschools and childcare centers, and thorough training, workforce development, teacher support and increased staffing. UP4WS teachers all possess, or are on an approved path to obtain, the highest qualifications to teach within the program.
UP4WS functions as first base of the Kids' Home Run program and strives to link all families in the community to high quality, affordable preschool.
