About Discovery Preschool
Preschool marks the beginning of a life-long learning career for your child. Discovery Preschool has reimagined their large outdoor space to bring the classroom outdoors. We offer hands-on, play-based approach to learning while helping to grow a child's cognitive understanding of numbers, shapes, colors, and the alphabet. Simultaneously, we support the child and family by offering a welcoming, positive, safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment.
Discovery Preschool participates in our county’s Quality Rating Improvement System and received a top rating for quality. We utilize research based, developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned to the California State Preschool Standards, a comprehensive social emotional curriculum, and our teachers have high levels of education in Early Childhood Development.
Discovery Preschool is a school-year program, beginning in late August and finishing in early June. Families sign their children up for one month sessions beginning in August, with priority registration for participants who are currently enrolled in the program. Fees will vary according to the number of class meetings each session.

Frequent Questions & Answers:
Q: What if my child is not fully potty trained? my child is not fully potty trained? Can he/she still attend?
A: Absolutely! We understand and recognize that some children take longer to potty train and that is perfectly normal! Let us take the pressure off you. We prefer pull-ups over diapers, and we will help facilitate the potty-training process.
Q: I am worried about COVID. What protocols do you have in place to help mitigate the spread of COVID?
A: Your child’s safety has and always will be our top priority, which is why we transitioned to an outdoor preschool during the pandemic. We are diligent with cleaning and disinfecting all toys, tables, chairs, bathrooms, workspaces, and more. Children must have their temperatures taken and must wash their hands upon arrival. We work in smaller groups. We will follow all county and city mandates, polices, and procedures. Our staff is vaccinated and boosted.
Q: English is not my child’s first language. Can he/she still attend?
A: More of a reason to enroll your child! We will work with you and use lots of visual pictures to help communicate with your child. We will encourage you to continue to speak your primary language at home, and to speak English at school so that your child will learn both languages at the same time.
Q: My child is very shy and has never been away from home. How do you help make this transition?
A: We understand that this may be your child’s first experience away from you and it is our goal to create a safe, loving, nurturing, and happy experience for everyone. We have lots of tricks up our sleeves! We will use puppets, stories, music, and silly games to help your child feel comfortable. We will even send you pictures to show you how well your child is doing.
Q: I keep reading about Quality Counts and Home Run. What are these and how does your preschool participate?
A: The City of West Sacramento is dedicated to offering high quality preschools to all residents and Discovery is considered a Quality Counts preschool. Our staff go through rigorous quality assessments, participate in multiple professional development courses, and have access to many resources. By enrolling your child into a Quality Counts preschool, you are helping to advance their educational and social-emotional development that will carry into adulthood. There is also an opportunity to create a college saving account with the Home Run program.
