A MESSAGE FROM CHIEF STRANGE ON WSPD USE OF ALPR TECHNOLOGY:

As Chief of Police, I want to be clear from the start: we are duty-bound to support and defend the civil rights of all people. Any technology we use must meet that standard first.

I support the responsible, legal use of ALPR and public-space camera tools because—when governed properly—they protect civil liberties and materially improve public safety. They help us solve serious crimes, recover stolen vehicles, locate suspects and missing persons, and conduct investigations with more precision.

I also understand why people have questions. Concerns about access, sharing, and misuse are legitimate. That is why we insist on strict policy, controlled access, documented justification, audit trails, and regular oversight. If misuse ever occurs, it will be addressed. Our community should expect both safety and safeguards—and that is the standard we will continue to uphold
